How do UK invoice finance providers differ?

Invoice finance providers sell three distinct models, and choosing the model matters more than choosing between providers within one. Spot providers fund individual invoices on demand, whole-book discounters fund your entire ledger confidentially, and factors fund the ledger while taking over credit control. This guide compares the providers and models; for the mechanics of advance rates and fees, start with our invoice finance guide.

Factoring (with credit control)Specialist factors on the panel80–90% of the ledgerDiscount fee plus 0.5–3% of turnover service feeTypically 12 months

All rates are indicative only and subject to individual lender assessment, and depend heavily on the quality of your debtor book.

What does each model actually give you?

Spot invoice finance funds one invoice at a time, with no ongoing contract. Triver is the flagship single-invoice provider on Fundably’s panel, advancing against individual invoices with same-day funding for straightforward cases. Per-invoice pricing is higher than whole-book rates, but you pay only when you use it, which makes it the right shape for businesses with occasional large invoices or lumpy contract revenue.

Whole-book invoice discounting funds your entire sales ledger and is confidential: customers pay you as normal and never know the ledger is financed. You keep your own credit control. It is the cheapest model per pound advanced, and correspondingly the most demanding: providers typically look for around £250,000 of annual turnover, established credit control processes and a clean debtor book.

Factoring funds the ledger and takes over chasing payment, under the provider’s name or sometimes yours. Customers generally know. The service fee pays for a working credit-control function, which for a small team without an accounts receivable person can be worth more than it costs. It is usually the entry point for smaller businesses in recruitment, construction and manufacturing.

Which invoice finance model suits your business?

  • Occasional large invoices, or you want to trial invoice finance: spot funding through a provider such as Triver, no contract, pay per use
  • Established B2B business with steady invoicing and its own credit control: confidential discounting, the cheapest ongoing model
  • Growing business without a credit-control function: factoring, where the service fee replaces a hire
  • Customers are consumers, or invoices are small and numerous: invoice finance is the wrong family; see types of business finance for better fits, such as a credit line or merchant cash advance

One structural point worth knowing: in invoice finance, your customers’ creditworthiness matters as much as yours, because the invoices are the security. A young business invoicing blue-chip customers can access excellent terms, which makes this one of the most accessible products for early-stage B2B businesses, and one reason a bank decline says little about what the wider panel will offer.

How do you compare invoice finance offers?

Provider quotes are hard to compare because fees hide in different places. Put every offer through the same five questions:

  • Advance rate: what percentage lands on day one, and does it drop for older invoices or concentrated debtors?
  • Total cost per invoice: discount fee plus service fee plus any fixed fees, in pounds on your typical invoice
  • Minimum monthly fees: a facility priced for your busy months can become expensive in quiet ones
  • Contract and notice period: spot funding has none; whole-book contracts typically run 12 months, and exit terms vary
  • Debtor concentration limits: many providers cap how much of the facility one customer’s invoices can occupy

Applying through Fundably compares invoice finance offers across the 50+ lender panel alongside term loans and credit lines in the same application, with a soft credit check at the matching stage that does not affect your credit score. As a commercial finance broker and NACFB member, we return offers typically within hours, with the fee structures translated into comparable totals.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best invoice finance provider in the UK? It depends on the model your business needs. Triver leads on Fundably's panel for same-day single-invoice funding with no contract, while whole-book discounting and factoring providers compete on ledger quality: their best terms go to businesses with strong debtor books and low bad-debt history. The right question is which model fits your invoicing pattern; the provider comparison follows from it.
Can a new business get invoice finance? Yes, more easily than most other finance. Because the invoice is the security, providers weight your customers' creditworthiness heavily, so a young business invoicing established commercial customers can qualify with as little as a few months of trading. Spot invoice finance is the natural starting point, since there is no contract commitment.
Will my customers know I am using invoice finance? With confidential invoice discounting, no: customers pay you as normal. With factoring, the provider typically contacts customers to collect payment, so yes. Spot invoice finance varies by provider, with some operating confidentially and others notifying the debtor. If confidentiality matters to your customer relationships, say so up front and it becomes a filter on the panel.
How much does invoice finance cost compared to a loan? Whole-book invoice discounting typically works out at a 3–12% equivalent APR, which is competitive with secured term lending and usually cheaper than unsecured loans for the same business, because the debtor book is security. Factoring adds a service fee of 0.5–3% of turnover for credit control. Spot funding costs more per invoice but nothing between uses. Our business finance interest rates guide covers how to compare the different pricing units.
